Known primarily for his immense contributions to college football and basketball (earning him Hall of Fame inductions in both sports), Amos Alonzo Stagg also loomed large on the baseball diamond. As a Yale player, Stagg posted a 20-strikeout game and is said to have invented the concept of a batting cage. He later coached the University of Chicago's baseball team for 19 seasons. Offered is Page 208 of The Illustrated American picturing both a posed and action shot of Stagg with ball in hand, captioned "Yale's Famous Battery Dann & Stagg" and "Stagg sending a whistler." What's more, there is a genial shot of "Our Correspondent Walter Camp," whose article "YALE ATHLETICS: A Review of Its History" appears in full on the reverse side (Page 207) and concludes, "Of the championships awarded in the last ten years, Yale has won seven out of ten in boating, nine out of ten in base-ball, and four out of six in football, or a total of twenty out of a possible twenty-six." Dimensions are 11x16 and condition is EX-MT.
