Exactly how this shaved-down Simmons gamer became the vessel for autographs at the 1940 Mid-summer Classic in St. Louis is a bit of a mystery. Bucketfoot Al had last made the All-Star roster in the mid-1930s, and since that time he'd bounced around between Detroit, Washington, Boston, Cincinnati and Philadelphia. Perhaps the half-bat's origins can best be traced by what appears to be a previous owner's name and Boston location on the lower handle. Additional period notations in a vintage hand read "American League All Stars - 1940" (upper barrel) and "American - 0 - 3 - 1 / National - 4 - 7 - 1" (lower barrel). The 37.5", 17.3 oz. lumber displays 30 shellacked signatures averaging “4-6” w/J. DiMaggio (“3-4”), T. Williams (“5-6”), Foxx (“5”), Greenberg (“5-6”), Berg (“4”), Appling, Cronin, Boudreau, Feller (light), Ruffing, Dickey, Gordon, Cramer, Finney, McQuinn, Bridges, Milnar, Mack, Keltner, Hemsley, Keller, Rolfe, Leonard, Travis, Hayes, Pearson, Newsom, Daly, Baker. Light use with green bat rack marks and a light coat of pine tar on handle. Full LOA from John Taube/PSA/DNA. Full LOA from JSA.
