Get a glimpse of “Muggsy” in his formative years with this rare 1891 cabinet photo. Baseball great John McGraw is shown in his second year as pro in this antique Cedar Rapids Canaries photo which presents in respectable (VG) condition with appealing gloss and a sturdy backer. Full details on our website.
In 1891 at the age of eighteen, McGraw made the jump to the majors off performances against Cy Young while playing with a Florida based traveling team and against Cap Anson with the CR Canaries. Joining McGraw in reporting to the Baltimore Orioles of the AA was Cedar Rapids teammate and player/manager John Godar who most likely owned the offered photo, as it has been determined that it was his hand that applied the reverse side pencil notation “John McGraw, June 20/91”. One of the earliest photos of McGraw in uniform, this pre-rookie card is a museum worthy rarity that was discovered by our consignor near the source. One of two ultra rare items from the short-lived 1890-1892 Illinois-Iowa League presented in this auction, this important 4-1/2 x 5-1/2“ cabinet photo depicts the 1891 Canaries players in a seated row with Godar at the far right and McGraw next to him at second from right. This talented Cedar Rapids squad fielded a total of six future major leaguers and it’s highly likely that one or more of the other four are included in this photo. These potential subjects are Jake Drauby, Bill Hoffer, Kid Summers and Bill Whitrock. All things considered, this is a truly incredible opportunity to own a real piece of baseball history.
The other I.-I. League item in this auction is an 1892 Constitution and By-Laws guide which can be found in the publications category.
