Description

Score a rare page from baseball history, with this Negro American League scorecard. Authentic period Negro League gameday souvenirs are fairly tough, especially examples in better condition, such as the one offered here. Moderate creasing along the top edge and corners limits the grade for this vintage scorecard to (VG), otherwise this handsome publication is fairly crisp and clean with a solid spine. Printed for use during one of two games between either the Philadelphia Stars vs. the Chicago American Giants, or the Kansas City Monarchs vs. the Indianapolis Clowns, this unused scorecard is dated to c.1950-1951, by the names of the participating players and managers printed below the scoring grids. In particular, three Hall of Famers are listed, with Oscar Charleston as the manager of the Philadelphia Stars, Satchel Paige as a pitcher for the Chicago American Giants, and Buck O'Neil as the manager of the Kansas City Monarchs. Charleston was the skipper of the Stars from 1948-1952, and O'Neil managed the Monarchs from 1948-1955, but it's Paige who really narrows down the time frame window. Paige was released by the Cleveland Indians at the end of the 1949 season, after Bill Veeck sold the team. He returned to barnstorming, until joining the St. Louis Browns in 1951, when Veeck assumed control of the "Gateway City" franchise.
